WAUSAU - Herbert G. Sorenson, 79, formerly of Racine, passed away Friday, April 1, 2005, at Aspirus Hospital in Wausau.
Herbert was born in Racine April 19, 1925, son of the late George and Hertha Desens Sorenson. On November 12, 1949, in Dubuque, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Elaine Wilms.
Herb attended Washington Park High School and was proud to be a High School State Wrestling Champion in 1942. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy Armed Guard and was also a Merchant Marine on an ore boat in the Great Lakes. He retired after many years of employment at Halverson Homes and Nelson Company. Herb was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Racine, serving on the Board of Trustees and many other committees, and was a current member of the First United Methodist Church in Wausau. He also served as President for the Building Laborers Local 108 in the 1980's and was a parent volunteer for the Racine Kilties Drum and Bugle Corps. Herb was well-known for being one of the most loyal Packer and Badger fans in the State of Wisconsin. He was also an avid birdwatcher and deer spotter. Above all, he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine of Wausau, WI; his sons, James Herbert (Suellen) Sorenson of San Diego, CA, Jeff Walter (Jennifer) Sorenson of Wausau, WI; daughters, Terri Sorenson (Gary) Gildin of Carlisle, PA, Wendy Sorenson (Kurt Squire), Sally (Scott) Farnsworth, all of Racine, WI; his grandchildren, Benjamin, Zachary, and Megan Gildin, Nicholas, Evan, and Maxwell Sorenson, Anna, Emily, Laura, and Alex Marquardt, and Melody Squire; brother, Melvin (Jo) Sorenson of Sturtevant, WI; sisters, Audrey Fowles of Racine, WI, Dolores Smith of Lapeer, MI, Sharon (Robert) Peterson of Sobieski, WI; dear friends, Jim and Kitty Roberts; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra Lynn Sorenson; and his sister, Ruth Sorenson.
Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 745 Main Street, Thursday, April 7, 2005, 11 a.m. with Rev. Harvey Delery officiating. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Wednesday from 7 until 9 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10:30 a.m. until time of service. Memorials to the Salvation Army or to the Raptor Education Group of Antigo, Wis. have been suggested.
