Jane Barnes Slipp, 88
PORTLAND - Jane Barnes Slipp, 88, of Portland, passed peacefully at home on August 11, 2013 with her loving family at her side. Jane was born in Pittsburgh, Penn. on March 28, 1925, the daughter of Warren and Marion Barnes. They moved to Portland when Jane was still very young where she attended Roosevelt and Lincoln Junior before graduating from Deering High School in 1943. After graduation, she continued her education at the University of Maine, Orono for two years before returning home to care for her ailing mother. It was during this time she met and fell in love with her soon to be husband Donald. They settled in Portland where they raised their two sons and recently celebrated their 67th anniversary.
Jane had many interests- she was a tournament contract bridge player, artist, knitter, seamstress, Cub Scout Den Mother, golfer, and Sunday School teacher. She, along with her husband, was committed to the community and volunteered for numerous service organizations including the Salvation Army and Lyseth School. Jane was most happy when surrounded by her family and friends, and took great pride in her children's and grandchildren's accomplishments- both in Maine and away.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Charles Barnes and niece Nancy Barnes. She is survived by her husband Donald; two sons, Dana and Gary and their wives, Paula and Kim; and four grandchildren, Jarad, Justin, Kristin, and Matthew.
With respect to Jane's wishes, there will be a memorial service at the North Deering Congregational Church, 1364 Washington Avenue, on Thursday, August 15th at 11:00 a.m., followed by a celebration of Life luncheon at the Italian Heritage Center, 40 Westland Ave., Portland directly following.
The family would like to express a special thank you to all of her wonderful friends and neighbors, the Visiting Nurses Hospice team, and to Linda Herrick, her home RN and caregiver.
